Upon viewing the fall collections at New York Fashion Week, it was clear that the athletic-inspired looks of 2012 through ’15 are out, and a frilly romantic maximalism is back in. Women like myself who skew more Sporty Spice than Baby will be relieved to know, however, that sleek and simple never go out of style, and a racerback is forever. Above, discover 10 looks from this past week’s shows that prove it. The references are more subtle than in seasons past—Alexander Wang has traded full football ensembles and sports bras for corsetry—but a sweat pant here and a glorified shoelace there are much-needed nods to sweat and motion.
Of course, we’ll see the best fall looks on red carpets in mere minutes, so why not make like a Hollywood star and pull next season’s trends into the here and now? Next week, I’ll share a collection of cool fall-inspired pieces that you can work into your athleisure wardrobe ASAP.
